Understanding the Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam Registration Transition

The Government of India has introduced the new MSME System on 1 July, 2020, replacing the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) with the Udyam Registration.

The transition from Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam Registration was made to provide a more integrated and simple MSME registration system. It uses government databases to verify relevant business information and provides real time Aadhaar, PAN and GSTIN validation.

If you are a business owner who previously registered under the Udyog Aadhaar scheme, it is essential to understand that migrating to the new Udyam Registration system is not just recommended but was required by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

The MSME Ministry has already extended the migration deadline multiple times, with the final extension up to 30 June 2022. This was to ensure all existing UAM holders can complete their transition smoothly.

Existing businesses registered under EM-Part-II or Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) were required to register again on the Udyam Registration portal. According to the official notification, existing UAM or EM-Part-II registrations were initially valid only up to 31 March 2021. The Ministry of MSME extended the validity of EM-Part-II and UAM registrations several times, with the final extension up to 30 June 2022. Existing EM-Part-II / UAM holders should complete their migration to Udyam Registration as soon as possible.
